Hey Guys! Welcome back to the Series of blitZ - The Off-road SUV design. From this post onwards i am going to explain and share every part and working mechanisms in detail. I already told you it's very large design. For me it took 2 weeks to complete the design. Even i designed this in Onshape Mobile.
Well the today's topic of the series is Real Wheel Assembly with Differential. For every four wheel vehicle differential is must and should, because it is playing the most crucial role of running the vehicle in all directions without any un comfortable to the wheels and to the driver also.
First of all what is differential ? And it's working
A differential is an working mechanisms in four or more wheel vehicles to transfer the speed of the both wheels will be variable while taking the turnings to avoid the breaking of wheel shaft.
The parts of the differential are :
- Two different shafts with equal dimensions
- Bevel gear ( Ring gear )
- Sun gear and planet pinion gear
- Pinion gear
- Casing

Working Of Differential
The assembly of the differential is looks like as shown in the figure. The pinion gear which is transfer the speed and torque to the differential which is connected to bevel gear ( ring gear ) with gear relation. Then the ring gear will distribute the power to both shafts equally while moving straight direction and variable speeds while taking turnings. For example look at the figure below
The vehicle is taking right/left turn, while turning the direction of the wheel is changing with tangent angle. In this the left wheel is need to move with more speed then the right wheel, because the turning angle of the both wheels are different. In this way the differential will works. If we used a single shaft for both wheels, the shaft will face torsional force effect and cause breakage of shaft.
